SAN PEDRO DEL PINATAR - Area Profile

The First thing you will notice while entering San Pedro del Pinatar is a beautiful display on the roundabout, the display pictured below is one of many you will see throughout this interesting and beautiful town. The elected councils in a lot of the towns that we visit have decorated as many roundabouts as possible with symbols directly related to each towns culture, bravo to the local councils for creating such interesting sights and landmarks. San Pedro {for short} is a great place to live or holiday in; the last few years have seen a lot of investment in infrastructure and a steady growth in the number of people purchasing new homes. The town's skyline is low due to the strict planning laws in place. The information below will give you a brief history of this fascinating area.

San Pedro del Pinatar (St Peter of the Pinewoods) received its name towards the beginning of the 17th century, after the building of a small temple that the fishermen dedicated to San Pedro the apostle and fisherman. Prior to this period it was called "El Pinatar", due to its extensive forested area (particularly pine trees), where in winter, wild boar could be hunted. Around this area the remains of Roman villages have been found confirming the presence of this civilisation.

The most obvious inheritance from the past are the salt flats of Coterillo, a development initiated by the Romans. These flats, together with the dunes of the beach of la Llana, form one of the most important natural areas of the Region of Murcia, and in which occurs the spectacular passage and resting place of flamingos migrating to Africa.
